Girls Be Ambitious

A program that enables girls who are unable to go to school due conditions of poverty to attend one of our rural schools and receive an education instead of having to work in the fields, do chores at home or take care of siblings.

Sorn Sokchea

Sorn Sokchea is a 17 year- old student in Grade 10 at The Margaret & Derek Jerram School in Kraul Chi Village, Kraul Chi Commune, Boribo District, Kampong Chhnang Province.

Sokchea has one younger sister and one older sister. Her parents are farmers and have about 100 square meters of farmland, that can produce 800 kg of rice per year. After rice harvest season, her parents use this land for planting vegetables such as winter melons, gourds, cucumbers and pumpkins. Soksan’s father is also a construction worker. He works making fences, building houses and doing other farm work for neighbors to earn extra money for the family. Often, Sokchea is unable to attend school because she is busy selling vegetables at the market to make extra money, or staying at home to help with housework.
