Girls Be Ambitious

A program that enables girls who are unable to go to school due conditions of poverty to attend one of our rural schools and receive an education instead of having to work in the fields, do chores at home or take care of siblings.

Chhuon Sao Ream

Chhuon Sao Ream is a 16 year-old student in the 8th grade at The Savant School, which is located in Taney village, Choam Sangker commune, Phnom Sruoch district, and Kampong Speu province.

Ream has two brothers and a sister and is the third child in the family. Her father’s name is Mr. Ham Samnang, who is 37-years old, and her mother’s name is Mrs. Mom Ra, who is 36-years old.  Both are farmers.  The family owns half a hectare of farmland for growing rice. Ream said her parents are able to produce 900 kg of rice per year. Her parents do not sell this rice but use it to feed their family for the year. As this rice is not used for an income, her parents have to find other employment. As a result, her parents work as mango pickers, earing 60,000 Khmer Riels = $15 per day. However, this income is still not enough to financially support the family’s needs, such as food, clothes and school supplies.  Therefore, Ream sometimes misses school to help her parents pick mangoes.

Ream expressed her future goal as: “I want to become a teacher of Khmer literature because this subject is easy to understand for teaching to the kids in the next generation.”
