Girls Be Ambitious

A program that enables girls who are unable to go to school due conditions of poverty to attend one of our rural schools and receive an education instead of having to work in the fields, do chores at home or take care of siblings.

Chieng Khunra is 14 years old, and in the 8th grade the Rak Smey Rik Reay junior high school in Bos Village, Rik Reay Commune, Rovieng District, Preah Vihear Province.

There are 5 members in her family, a grandmother, aunt, uncle, and two daughters. Khunra was born in a poor family, and she is the second child in the family. Her oldest brother lives with her relatives in another village. Hey mother passed away many years ago from phthisis. As for her father, he married a new wife after her mother passed away. He now lives with his new wife, and has left his daughters to live with their grandmother. Her grandmother has one hectare of farmland, which can produce 1,000 kg of rice per year, but they do not tell this rice, they just keep it for their daily consumption.

On Sunday Khunra always works on a cashew farm to help support her family. Khunra is a good student and daughter, she works hard in school and continues her hard work when she gets home by helping her grandmother with housework, taking care of her siblings and doing chores.

In the future she wants to be a teacher because she loves this job and wants to earn money for her family.
