Girls Be Ambitious

A program that enables girls who are unable to go to school due conditions of poverty to attend one of our rural schools and receive an education instead of having to work in the fields, do chores at home or take care of siblings.

Chhourn Seakheng

Heng is a 14 years old student in Grade 7 at the Janie’s School in Snam Preah commune, Bakan district, Pursat province.

There are eight members in her family. She has three brothers and one sister. Three of her brothers went to school. She is the first child in the family. Her father’s name is Chhen and her mother’s name is Runth. They are both farmers. They had a small farmland that can produce rice about 500 kg a year. This is not enough to feed the eight people in the family. So to get more extra income, her father goes to work as worker at construction site and get about $5 per day. And her mother also in debts for growing rice in some bad years. Her mother only a farmer, she doesn’t have other job to get extra income. She does her work as a farmer only in rainy season. In dry season, she only stay at home and find food in anyways.

Heng is the oldest sister in the family. So she has to look after all brothers and a sister. She helped her mother to do all kind of housework, take care of her cows.
