Girls Be Ambitious

A program that enables girls who are unable to go to school due conditions of poverty to attend one of our rural schools and receive an education instead of having to work in the fields, do chores at home or take care of siblings.

To Be Selected

Hoem Thidaroth is 14 years old, and in 8the th grade at the Rak Smey Rik Reay junior high school in Bos Village, Rik Reay Commune, Rovieng District, Preah Vihear Province.

There are 7 members in her family, two parents, two older sisters and two older brothers. She has 7 siblings and she is the eighth child in her family. Her two older sisters got married and they live in different houses now. Her family earns a living by doing farm work on one and a half hectares of farmland, which can produce 800 – 1,000 kg of rice per year.  However, their yearly harvest cannot cover their needs throughout the year. Therefore, they have to buy additional rice to eat for themselves. When planting or harvesting season arrives, her parents have to leave home to stay on the farm until work finishes (one week or two weeks).

Thidaroth is a good student and daughter. She works hard in school, and when she has free time she helps her mother with housework, chores and sometimes collects cashew nuts, earning 15,000 Riel per day.

In the future she wants to be a teacher because she wants to share her knowledge with the kids. Moreover, she wants to earn money to support her family and give them an opportunity to live a better life.
