Girls Be Ambitious

A program that enables girls who are unable to go to school due conditions of poverty to attend one of our rural schools and receive an education instead of having to work in the fields, do chores at home or take care of siblings.

To Be Selected

Houth Sreymao is 18 years old, and is in the 10th grade at The Rovieng high school in Thnal Keng village, Rong Roeurng commune, Rovieng District, Preah Vihear Province.

There are 7 members in her family, an older sister, a younger sister, her aunt, uncle and two children. Sreymao is the second child. Her parents passed away not long after she was born, she and her sister were adopted by their aunt and her family since they were very young.  Her aunt and uncle are both farmers. Her aunt’s family is poor and owns one and a half hectares of farmland, which can produce 1,000 kg of rice per year. When her uncle is finished harvesting rice, he is also a construction worker, earning 20,000 Riel per day. Together, her aunt and uncle make very little money, and struggle to support their family.

Houth Sreymao rides the bicycle to school every day. She works very hard in class, and when she is not studying she is helping her aunt with housework, and taking care of her cousins and sister. Additionally, she sometimes helps her aunt in the rice field during harvesting and planting season. Sometimes, she goes to the neighbors farms to pick cashew fruit, earning 10,000 -20,000 Riel a day.

In the future, Sreymao wants to be a teacher because she loves this job, she likes teaching and she wants to share her knowledge to the kids. Moreover, she wants to earn money to support her family.
