Girls Be Ambitious

A program that enables girls who are unable to go to school due conditions of poverty to attend one of our rural schools and receive an education instead of having to work in the fields, do chores at home or take care of siblings.

Lmut Somalin is 13 years old, and in the 7th grade at the Rak Smey Rik Reay junior high school in Bos Village, Rik Reay Commune, Rovieng District, Preah Vihear Province.

There are nine members in her family, two parents, one older sister and five older brothers. She is the seventh child in her family. Her parents are farmers who own one and a half hectares of farmland, which can produce 1,300 kg of rice per year. However, this land can hardly support the family for all their daily needs. Besides working on farm, her father is a day laborer in the village and earns money by harvesting rice, clearing grass, and doing other farm work for neighbors, earning 15,000 – 20,000 Riel per day. However, her mother has been sick for a long time, and is no longer able to work.

 Somalin is a good student and daughter, she works hard in school and she is a clever student in both Khmer class and English class. After school she helps her mother with housework and chores. On Sunday, sometimes she helps her father on the farm. s

In the future she wants to be a doctor because she wants to help all the people in her village, and she think that the hospital right now is too far. Moreover, she wants to earn money to support her family.
