Girls Be Ambitious

A program that enables girls who are unable to go to school due conditions of poverty to attend one of our rural schools and receive an education instead of having to work in the fields, do chores at home or take care of siblings.

Ry Sokny

Sokny is 13 years old student in Grade 7 at the Janie’s School in Snam Preah commune, Bakan district, Pursat province.

There are only two members in the house because her parents went away to work at a district in Thailand near Cambodia border as a garden keeper. They both worked at the same place. Sokny is first child and she has one younger brother. This family doesn’t have any farmland to grow rice like other family in the village, so that why they have to go away to work at Thailand. Both of them come to their homeland one a year to visit her children. Sokny got about $50 a month from her parents for expense on everything.

Sokny and her younger brother live in a small house. Luckily, her grandma’s house is near her house. So both of them don’t worry much for the security at day and night, and in order to get more extra food for daily meal, Sokny must growing some vegetables on the soil around her house too. Now she played as a mother. So, she has to do every kind of housework and outside house with her widow grandma since morning till evening.
