Girls Be Ambitious

A program that enables girls who are unable to go to school due conditions of poverty to attend one of our rural schools and receive an education instead of having to work in the fields, do chores at home or take care of siblings.

Huonh Sophea

Huonh Sophea is a 12 year- old student in Grade 2 at The Gloria and Henry Jarecki Special Skills School, #227, Norg Leak village, O’Chum commune, O’Chum district, Ratanakiri province.

She lives with her widow mother, whose husband died many years ago. Sophea has two sisters and three brothers. She is the second child in the family. Her widow mother is farmer. They have about a hectare of land for planting rice and cashew trees, which is not enough to support their needs. After the rice harvest season, her mother sells vegetables in the village. For this type of work her mother gets $ 3.00 or $ 4.00 a day. Unfortunately, this work is not regular for Sophea’s mother. While her mother goes out to work Sophea has to take care of her younger sisters and brothers and do chores around the house.
