Girls Be Ambitious

A program that enables girls who are unable to go to school due conditions of poverty to attend one of our rural schools and receive an education instead of having to work in the fields, do chores at home or take care of siblings.

Prum Sophanith

Prum Sophanith is 11 years old, and in 5th grade at The Shintoshin Rotary and Speros (Hawaii) School #2, which is located in Pal Hal village, Rik Reay commune, Rovieng district, and Preah Vihear province.

There are 4 members in her family, her parents, and one younger brother. She is the first child in the family. Her father is in the army and her mother is a factory worker in Kampong Cham province. Her grandmother said, her parents sent her to live with her grandparents, aunt and uncle since she was 4 years. Nowadays Sophanith and her one younger brother live with grandparents and her relatives. Her parents always send $35 per month to her grandmother to buy food and buy something for Sophanith and her younger brother. Her parents own one hectare of farmland to grow rice, they just started growing rice this year. Her parents asked permission to grow rice and when they finish their farming, they go back to work at Kampong Cham. Sophanith said her parents always visit her twice a year on Pchum Ben day and Khmer New Year. Her grandmother said, her parents work far from the house for many years and they are still poor. Sometimes she spends her own money to buy some stationary for their children.

Sophanith is a good student and good daughter. She studies hard, takes advice and when she is not studying, she always helps with housework and looks after her brother. Sometimes she asks her grandmother to make money by working at the neighbor’s farm, but her grandmother does not allow because she is still very young.

In the future she wants to be a teacher because she loves this job and likes teaching the kids, and she wants to earn money to support her family. She hopes that she can help the family and improve their living conditions.
