Girls Be Ambitious

A program that enables girls who are unable to go to school due conditions of poverty to attend one of our rural schools and receive an education instead of having to work in the fields, do chores at home or take care of siblings.

Mat Sotra

Mat Sotra is a 16 years old student in 7th grade at The ASIJ School which is located in Chup Krom village, Svay Leu commune, Svay Leu district, and Siem Reap province.

Sotra has gotten eight members in the family. Her parents, her two old sisters, her two old brothers and her younger brother. She is the fifth born in the family. Her parents are farmers. They have owned one hectare of farmland for growing rice. They have grown rice twice a year and they could get one ton (1000kg) at once. They sold half ton (500kg) to reimburse for the cost of fertilizer to the shop owner only and they couldn’t use that income to pay for something else besides the fertilizers’ reimbursement.

Sotra narrated that besides transplanting rice, her mother still tried to find some income from other ways in order to patch up the family’s needs. Her father was sometimes employed to build neighbors’ houses with other construction workers and he could benefit from $20 up to $40 per month. Besides studying Sotra helps her parents maintain animals and cleans her house.
