Girls Be Ambitious

A program that enables girls who are unable to go to school due conditions of poverty to attend one of our rural schools and receive an education instead of having to work in the fields, do chores at home or take care of siblings.

Thorn Yann

Thorn Yann is a 17year- old girl who was selected into Girls Be Ambitious Program 2015. She is now in the 10 grade at The Margaret & Derek Jerram School in Kraul Chi Village, Kraul Chi Commune, Boribo District, Kampong Chhnang Province.

She has four brothers and three sisters. She is the fifth child in the family. Her parents are farmers. The family owns only a hectare of land for rice, which is not enough to support their needs. Her mother can only do farm work, while also looking after the children. Besides working on the farm, her father is employed to do jobs such as: harvesting rice, clearing grass, and chopping the potatoes for the neighbor. With this work he earns about $ 4.50. All of this income is not enough to cover their daily needs. The reason for Yann’s frequent absence from school is that her family is poor and cannot afford to pay for her studies.

Thorn Yann is able to attend her class regularly since she was selected and supported by the GBA program with good study performance.
