Girls Be Ambitious

A program that enables girls who are unable to go to school due conditions of poverty to attend one of our rural schools and receive an education instead of having to work in the fields, do chores at home or take care of siblings.

Chan Nai


Chan Nai is an 11-year-old student in 3rd grade at The Ascham School community, in Putang village, Romnea commune, Senmonorom district, Mondulkiri province.

Chan Nai has one sister and two brothers. She is the second child in the family. Her parents are farmers who own about one hectare of farmland and the yield of rice farming is about 700 kg/ a hectare. Profit from rice farming is not enough to feed this family, so her parents do seasonal works such as planting and harvesting cassavas, bananas, some vegetables, picking cashew nuts, and each of them earns about $4 per day.

Nowadays, her parents work at the field where growing cassavas (Annual income is $500). Besides working at the cassavas field, her parents are hired to pick pepper which earns 20.000 riel or $5 a day. Her father is also working at the rice field. However, the income isn’t regular and it isn’t enough to support the family. Chan Nai helps her mother to do house work when her mother not around.
