Girls Be Ambitious

A program that enables girls who are unable to go to school due conditions of poverty to attend one of our rural schools and receive an education instead of having to work in the fields, do chores at home or take care of siblings.

Sorn Bona

Sorn Bona is a 13-year-old student in 7th grade at The Bret Harte Middle School/Almaden Community in Sangker Doch Village, Sdech Kong Tbaung Commune, Banteay Meas District, Kompot Province.

She is the second child in the family and she has two siblings. They are both farmers but the rice harvest is not enough to feed their family. Besides working on their own farm, her father works clearing grass, making fences and doing other farm work for neighbors. For this type of work he earns around $4.50-$ 5.00 a day. It is not regularly.  Her mother also harvests rice for the neighbor’s farm. Bona is always late to class. She likes studying very much and tries to study hard. Bona’s mother wants her to attend class regularly. Unfortunately, this is not possible because she needs to help the family earn extra money.
