Girls Be Ambitious

A program that enables girls who are unable to go to school due conditions of poverty to attend one of our rural schools and receive an education instead of having to work in the fields, do chores at home or take care of siblings.

Thy Sreynit

Thy Sreynit is a 12-year-old student in 6th grade at Grace, Hope, Beloved school, which is located in Boeng Veng village, Tangkrasang commune, Beathey district and Kampong Cham province.

Sreynit has gotten only two sisters including her and she is the first child in the family. Her parents are farmers with owning a small plot of land for her house is already built and another 0.5 hectare to grow rice. A type of rice seed that her parents grow is “Neang Chen rice” that pays about 5 months to grow up for harvesting.

For yearly, her parents collect about 500 kg of rice’s yield for daily consumptions but that amount does not cover for a whole year of eating. Sreynit continued that her parents commonly sold out 100kg to pay for any debts too. She stated that, besides growing rice, her father always went to catch fishes, crabs and snails at the fields then her mother took them to sell at the market in order to get little revenue about $5 to support their living.

As for Sreynit, she is good at mathematics and Khmer literature and she always gets good scores of these courses, she said. She continued that she always helps her mother boiling rice and food after she comes back from school. In the future, she wants to be a cashier at a bank because she is good at mathematics. By the way, she loves uniforms of any workers at bank they wear and she can also get much salary to support her parents for the better life.
