Girls Be Ambitious

A program that enables girls who are unable to go to school due conditions of poverty to attend one of our rural schools and receive an education instead of having to work in the fields, do chores at home or take care of siblings.

Hat Sokhum

Hat Sokhum is a 14 -year-old student in 5th grade at The Shintoshin Rotary and Speros (Hawaii) School in Pal Hal Village, Rik Reay Commune, Rovieng District, Preah Vihear Province.

She has one sister and two brothers. She is the first child in the family. Her parents are farmers. Her family makes their living by growing rice, but their rice field is so far from home that when planting or harvesting season arrives, they have to leave home to stay on the farm until work finishes. Sokhum and her siblings stay with her grandma when her parents are in field. Although her family works very hard, they still face a lot of difficulties.  They can’t make enough money to support the daily needs of their family. Therefore, they live in poverty with not enough food or money to support their children’s education.  Sokhum sometimes helps her grandma look after her younger brother and do housework after class.
