The Aeon Jackfruit School

(July, 2001)

Chu Kheang is a third-grade teacher at the Aeon Jackfruit School.  He has been a teacher for 19 years and has four children, all of whom are adults.

In Their Own Words. . .

On the new building “I like the new building because it is a fine place with good fresh air and large windows.  It is different from the old building because the old one was inside the pagoda.  This meant that we had to stop teaching when people came to play.  Also, the former building was very old and had a leaky roof.  Another good thing about the new building is that it is made out of concrete and has strong windows, so it is possible to keep equipment in the classrooms at night without having to worry about it.  We teachers are doing out best to take good care of the new building.”

On teaching: “I passed the test to become a teacher and I love teaching.  I want my students to become smart and develop the country.”

On school subjects: “I like teaching Khmer because I love the subject and want to share it with my students.  Mathematics is difficult to teach because some lessons are difficult for the students to comprehend and for him to explain.  The students like Khmer and mathematics because they are generally the easiest to learn.  The students don’t dislike any of the subjects.”

On the future of his students:  “Since I began teaching, some of my students have become teachers.  Also, other students will get good jobs which is important for the school because it shows other students that a good future is possible.”

Message for the Aeon Group: “Thank you very much for building this school for us.”
