The Aeon Lime School

(August, 2001)

Kheun Van is a 13-year-old fifth grade student at the Aeon Lime School.  He was ranked 19th among his 35 classmates at the end of last year.  His mother raises pigs and his father is a rice farmer.  His home is three kilometers away from the school.

In Their Own Words

On school subjects: “I like mathematics most because it is easy to understand.  I dislike Khmer because it is boring.”

On his future: “I plan to graduate from high school.  Maybe my parents will allow me to study there.  If I graduate it will be easy to get a job.  I want to become a teacher.”

On leaving his village: “I have left the village once to visit Siem Reap and Angkor Wat.  I was nervous and happy when I saw the temple because of the history, because the rocks were so heavy and the buildings were big.”

If I could go anywhere…: “I would go to Phnom Penh because I have never seen a big city before.”
