The Dixon Learning Center

(July, 2001)

Reun Leak is a student at the Dixon Learning Center. She is sixteen years old and in third grade. She was ranked ninth among the 18 students in her class at the end of the school year. Among her five siblings, one sister is also studying at the school, and the rest are married.

In Their Own Words. . .

On school subjects: “I like to study mathematics because I can learn how to calculate and it will be easier to make a business. But the subject that I dislike is social science because it is difficult to understand.”

On her family: “My parents are farmers. I also would like to study in secondary school because I would like to find a job in the future but I think that my parents won’t permit me to because my family does not have enough money for me to study more.”

On the new building: “The new building is much different because in the old building we lacked tables and chairs. The building was open, so when it rained, water came in the sides. There was a roof, but it seemed like there was not one, because the roof leaked so much. Now we don’t have to worry about class being interrupted as before.

On her hobbies: “When I have free time I always read books and play high jump with my friends at the school. If I am able to go anywhere I want to go to Rovieng district to visit my grandmother living there.”

On her future: “When I grow up I would like to become a nurse to help the villagers here.”

Message for donor: “I am very happy to study in this new building and I thank Mr. Hawley for giving it to all of us, and I wish him good luck and happiness.”
