Ms. Suey Thaly, the 4th grade teacher at the Ezra Vogel School.

Suey Thaly is the 4th grade teacher at the Ezra Vogel School. She is single and graduated from the teacher school in Stung Treng province in October 2003. Then she was sent to teach at this school. Her home village is in Stung Treng province, but she lives with her relatives in Banlung since she begun teaching the children in Ratanakiri.

“Since I started teaching the children, I have never been paid, yet. I learned that a new state employee always get payment late at the start. My salary is 90,000 Riels or $23 a month.”

“I am very happy to live and work in Ratanakiri because the province has a good environment and climate. Another reason is that I am happy when I teach the children as I transfer my knowledge to them.”

“Now as the short vacation is coming soon, I worry the materials (pictures posted on the wall and handicrafts made by the student) in my classroom may get lost because the window shutters are not working well. It is loose so it is easy for somebody to get in and take the belonging in the class. The materials are cheap, but we can not buy it at the market when it lost.”
