Mrs. Chan Yieng sells flavored shaved ice by the Kampot Nippon Foundation School and the Thkeng Nippon Foundation School.

On herself: I am thirty-one years old. I have no land, so I cannot farm. But I have this small business. I sell shaved ice at the school. One bag of ice costs 200 riel [five cents]. Even though I work, the money I earn is not enough to feed my family. My husband is a laborer around the village. He works for those with money, near Preah Vihear. I don’t get to see him much, because I have to stay here and look out for my children. I have two. I don’t have my own house, so I stay with my older sister while her husband is away.

On the new building:

I am very glad we have these new schools. It is a great support for the children. We’ve never had schools like these. They’re most different from the old building; it’s like the sky and the ground. Most different.
