The Cambodia Rural School Project

The Kork Srok Nippon

Foundation School

Choeun On is a third grade student at the Kork Srok Nippon Foundation School.
Out of the thirty students in her class, she was ranked first.

On herself: I am fourteen years old. I have seven siblings; one of my sisters is also in the third grade together with me. My father is the commune chief. My mother is a farmer.

On the new building: I am very happy with the new school. It has new desks, new benches, new walls and whiteboard. When I was studying at the old school, the walls were covered with palm leaves. The rain would disturb me, because it would leak in from the roof and the walls. Even though it leaked, I would still study, but would have to find a new place to sit. The desks were also broken, and too few. So many students would sit cramped together.

Favorite subject: I like math the most, because I like learning about numbers. When I grow up, I can use the knowledge of numbers to think.

On her spare time: I study at home. Then I go to the fields. I help my parents with work in the rice paddies. When I play with friends, I like to play jump-rope and dodge ball.

In the future: “What?” I don’t know what I want to be in the future.

If she could do anything: If I could do anything, maybe I would want to be a nurse and treat patients.
