The Michael And Gail Yanney School

(August, 2001)

Kuon Chay is a 12-year-old fourth grade student at the Michael and Gail Yanney School.  She was ranked third among the 54 students in her class.  She is the daughter of two nurses who work in the local health center.

In Their Own Words. . .

On the new building:  “I like studying in the new school because it is safe and is without danger.  I was afraid that the old building would collapse, so I didn’t like it.”

On school subjects: “I am good at Khmer and I like it.  I like reading stories and legends.  After Khmer, I like mathematics because it has many difficult exercises, and difficult exercises can teach me how to think well.”

On her future:  “I want to study until 12th grade.  I want to study even more than that, but I doubt that my parents have the money to support me.  Maybe I will become a teacher.”“I dream of owning a printing house.  I will produce as many notebooks as I can and sell them at a cheap price so that poor children can buy them.  I am poor so I understand their situation.”

On traveling: “I want to visit England because now the English language is very popular in Cambodia.  I began learning English at a private school in this village.”

Message for the donors: “I would like to thank Jeremy Brest and Mr. and Mrs. Iris Brest for building this school for the children in my village to study.  I wish them happiness and harmony forever.”
