The Cambodia Rural School Project

The Overlake School

Kaem Poeun is a 12 years old third grade student at the Overlake School.
Out of the 59 students in his class, he was ranked tenth.

On himself:

I have two brothers and one older sister. Both of my brothers are studying here. My parents are both farmers. Our house is just down the road from the school.

On the new building:

It’s great. It’s much better than the old one: the roof, the wall, and everything inside the classroom is great. At the old school, all our desks were broken.

Favorite subject:

I like Khmer the most, because it teaches me how to write and be clever.

On his spare time:

I weed grass from the rice field with my parents, take care of my younger brother, and sometimes do my homework.

In the future:

I want to be a civil servant, like a policeman.

If he could have one wish:

I would want to be a civil service administrator. [If he was prime minister:] I would help the poor people by giving them rice and money.

If he could travel anywhere:

I would go to Angkor Wat because I’ve never been there.
