The Cambodia Rural School Project

The Ta Sanh Nippon

Foundation School

Mr. Nup Phan is the director of the Ta Sanh Nippon Foundation School. He is 51 years old

On himself:

I have five children. My wife is a housewife. Our home is four kilometers away from the school. I first became a teacher in 1993. This area used to be controlled by the Khmer Rouge, and I taught under the Khmer Rouge regime for six years. I have been a director for two years now. I have lived in Samlot since 1979. This place used to belong Koh Kong province, but the Khmer Rouge made it a part of Battambang. Before I became a teacher, I was a soldier for the Khmer Rouge.

On the new building:

I am very happy with the new building. But I have one problem, because now there are so many students wanting to go to school that I’m not sure we can enroll them all. Just this year we have four first grades. So next year we will have to begin teaching three shifts per day, as opposed to two. About 80 new students have enrolled once we got the new building. The old school was about two kilometers away from here. That school had a thatched roof and: whenever it rained, rain would come into the classroom. The new building is stronger than the old one. Students no longer need to worry about the rain. It is much easier for them to study now.
