Number Nine

(August, 2001)

Nay Saret is a 16-year-old fifth grade student at the World Mate School Number Nine.  She was ranked 12th among her 35 classmates at the end of last year.

In Their Own Words

On the new building: “I like the new building because it is good for the village.  It helps the villagers to get an education.  I was afraid to go to school in the old building because I was afraid that it would collapse.”

On her family: “My mother passed away while giving birth and my father went insane.  Both have been dead a long time.  Now I live with my two sisters.  One is older, the other is younger.  My brother is in middle school.  None of my relatives has ever finished middle school.”

On her free time: “When I am not in school, I take care of my younger sister, feed our pigs, and cook.”

If I could go anywhere…:  “I would go to Angkor Wat because it is a very famous place.”

If I could do anything…:  “I would read books.  I enjoy reading but we do not have enough to read.”
