Girls Be Ambitious

A program that enables girls who are unable to go to school due conditions of poverty to attend one of our rural schools and receive an education instead of having to work in the fields, do chores at home or take care of siblings.

To Be Selected

Chheung Sreynich is a 15 year-old student in the 7th grade at The Savant School, which is located in Taney village, Choam Sangker commune, Phnom Sruoch district, and Kampong Speu province.

Sreynich was born in a poverty-stricken family with nine members including her. There are two parents, two sons and five daughters. Sreynich is the youngest child in the family. Her father’s name is Mr. Yin Chey and he is 57-years old. Her mother’s name is Mrs. Sou Khorn and she is 47-years old. Both of her parents are farmers.  They own half a hectare of farmland that is used to produce about ten 50kg sacks of rice per year. Sreynich’s father is sometimes able to earn a small amount of money from playing the traditional Khmer musical instrument, the Tro (the Tro is Khmer stringed instrument similar to the violin, which has two strings and is played with a bow). However, that income is still not enough to financially support the family, so Sreynich’s father commonly has to climb palm trees to collect palm juice to sell.  Sreynich’s mother stays home to take care of the children, house and the family’s pigs.  As a result of the family’s life situation, Sreynich commonly misses school to work as a mango picker, earning 30,000 Khmer Riels or $7.50 a day.

Sreynich expressed her future goal as: “I want to become a teacher of Khmer literature because this subject is easy to understand and good for sharing to the next generation of kids.”
