To Be Selected

Kum Sokhum is 11 years old, and in 5 grade at The Shintoshin Rotary and Speros (Hawaii) School, which is located in Pal Hal village, Rik Reay commune, Rovieng district, and Preah Vihear province.

There are 4 members in her family, parents and a younger sister. She is the first child in her family. Her parents are farmers. A landmine has crippled her father’s left leg since 2011, while he was working on the farm, but her father can still work. They own one hectare of rice field, which can produce 800 kg – 1,000 kg of rice per year. Even her parents could gather 800 kg- 1,000 kg of rice per year, her parents didn’t sell it because the rice was kept for their daily consumption. To patch up the needs of the family, her mother decided to find extra income from the neighbors’ farms. The farms’ owners hired her to collect the cashew nuts, collect cassava, harvest rice and she earns about 20,000 Riel per day, but it is not regular work. Sometimes, on Sunday Sokhum goes to work for neighbors with her mother and can get 15,000 Riel per day.

Her parents try to work hard every day but sometimes it does not cover their needs. They want Sokhum to finish high school. Now they are poor but they do not want their children to work as a farmer like them. They hope that Sokhum will be educated and get a good job in the future and she can improve their living conditions.

Sokhum is a good student and daughter, she study hard in school and continues her hard work when she gets home by helping her mother with housework and taking care of her younger sister. After school she always helps her mother by taking care of their pets like chickens and pigs.

Kum Sokhum wants to be a doctor because she wants to help the people in her commune. Moreover, when she has money, she can support her family to get better life. Date Posted: 21 / August / 2018
