Girls Be Ambitious

A program that enables girls who are unable to go to school due conditions of poverty to attend one of our rural schools and receive an education instead of having to work in the fields, do chores at home or take care of siblings.

Tay Sok Vat

Tay Sok Vat is 16 years old and she is a student in the 9th grade at The Kozak Ohana School in Tatheav Village, Chey Commune, Kampong Svay District, Kampong Thom Province.

Sok Vat has four siblings and is the eldest child in the family. Her parents are farmers, but they do not have land of their own. The family picks rice from fields that have been abandoned and her grandmother plants various vegetables behind their house such as corn, water morning glory, yard long bean, and lemon grass to sell at the Market. Her family is able to pick 50kg of rice per year, which is not enough to support the family. Her grandmother can make in between $2-$4 a day selling vegetables at the market. As this is not enough to support the family, Sok Vat’s parents work as construction workers as well, earning $4/day.

In the future, she wants to become a teacher because she wants to teach the students in her commune and get a salary to support her family.
