The Alex and Lily Talarico School

(August, 2001)

Sok Phala is a 17-year-old ninth grade student at the Alex and Lily Talarico School.  He was ranked first among the 33 students in his class at the end of last year.  His parents are farmers and he has three sisters, all of whom have left school.

In Their Own Words . . .

On the new building: “I like the new building because it is sturdy and comfortable.  It contains lots of good equipment like chairs, desks and blackboards that were missing before.  It is very different from the old building.  There, the tables were unstable and hard to write on, and the blackboard would always fall on the ground.”

On his future: “If I pass all of my exams, I plan to graduate from high school.  I want to become a teacher once I graduate, because I think I will enjoy teaching younger students.”

On school subjects: “I like mathematics because I find it easy.  I dislike Khmer because I am not particularly good at it, and I don’t understand literature well.”

On his free time:  “I play football with my friends when I am not in school.”
