The Aeon Mango School

Beng Saron is 13 years old and in sixth grade at the Aeon Mango School.  (July, 2001)

Beng Saron is 13 years old and in sixth grade at the Aeon Mango School.  He has five brothers and sisters, two at school with him.

In Their Own Words. . .

On the new building:  “The old building was broken, but the new one is concrete so it looks good and strong.  In the old building, rain would spray the class, but that doesn’t happen any more.”

On school subjects:   “I am not good at mathematics, but I like Khmer.  I like it because I want to know about the history and culture of Cambodia.  I also love the computer class here.”

On his future: “I plan to finish secondary school, but not high school.  I don’t think that getting a high school diploma will help me to get a job.  I want to work in a hotel or some job where I can have much contact with foreigners.”

On his hobbies:  “In my free time, I read books, help my parents, and do my chores.  I also like to play hide and go seek.”

On his travels:  “I have never left the village, not even to go to Angkor Wat.  I am very interested in meeting foreigners, so I do plan to go there sometime in the future.”

On his family:  “My parents are farmers.  My oldest sister is 27, and she stopped studying after grade seven.  My younger brother and sister study at this school with me, and the rest are too young.  I like going to school with my brother and sister because I can look out for them.”
