School No. Two

(August, 2001)

Meun Srei Da is a 14-year-old fourth grade student at the Charles B. Wang-Computer Associates School Number Two.  She was ranked first in her class of 56 students at the end of last year.  Her mother and father sell cut timber and she is their only child.  Their home is 50 m from the new building..

In Their Own Words. . .

On the new building: “The old school lacked equipment.  Now we have enough equipment.  Now we have enough tables for everyone to sit at, for example.”

On school subjects: “I like mathematics best because it would help my parents in their business.  I dislike science and geography because they have nothing to do with helping my parents.”

On her free time: “When I am not in school, I help my parents.  I do clerking, help with selling, and other things.  I also like to read books.”

If I could go anywhere…: “I would go to Phnom Penh, because that is where I was born and where we lived before coming here.  I have family there, and I could study English so that I could get a good job.”

On her future: “I plan to go to high school, and my parents want me to as well.  When I grow up I want to be a businesswoman, especially if I can work with computers.”
