Foundation School

(July, 2001)

Hem Cheuth is a 64-year-old widow living in the village near the school.  She has been living in Chhe Teal Chrum her whole life.  She has five children, all of whom are adult.

In Their Own Words. . .

On the new school building: “I have two grandchildren.  When they get older they will go to this new school building.  It is a good chance for them because before there was no school in this village.”

On her family and livelihood: “I have three sons and two daughters.  All but one of my sons is married.  He lost his leg in a landmine accident.  He and I make thatching to make roofs for the other village houses.”

On the future of her two grandchildren:  “They are both boys, four and one and a half years old.  When they get older they will go to primary school, but no more because the other schools are too far away.  Then they will probably live in this village.”

On education: “My husband, my children and I never went to school.  Having this school is important for my grandchildren and because it helps the village develop.  Thank you.”
