Chan Mean is a sixth grade student at the Kampot Nippon Foundation School.
In her class of forty-five, she was ranked first.

On herself: I am fifteen years old. I have seven siblings, and I‘m the second-born. I’m the only one at this school because my parents are very poor. My other siblings are at home helping my parents with their work. My parents are rice farmers. I come from a village three kilometers away, but there’s no school there, so my parents send me here for school.

On the new building: I am very happy. I received a new building and now I have fresh and cool air when I study. The school grounds are big, and I can play there. I play skipping rope with my friends. At the old school, there was no place to play. What I remember the most about the old school was that the classroom was very small and narrow. It was difficult to study there. It was a place where things would easily break or go missing. Nothing there seemed to last for very long.

Favorite subject: I like Khmer the most. Dictation is very easy, and so I like dictation. I always get the highest score. One of the lessons I liked the most in Khmer was one called “Ratanakkiri–A Place for Tourism”. I’ve never been to Ratanakkiri, but I’d like to travel there.

On her spare time: At home, I feed the pigs, and help Grandmother water the vegetables. I also help maintain the fence around our house.

After primary school: I’d like to keep on studying at secondary school. After that I want to become a doctor. I want to help the people in the village.

If she could do anything: If I could do anything, I would like to continue my studies in the Soviet Union. I’d like to work there.
