In Their Own Words. . .

“I like school because I like to study, and I like to play with my friends.”

on her favorite subject “My favorite subject is Khmer class because it is easy to study!”

on hobbies “I like to play with my friends. My favorite game is ‘Bay khom.”‘ (‘Bay Khom’ is a Khmer game involving 12 holes in the ground and 11 rocks placed in the holes. The goal is get as many rocks as you can before they run out, similar to ‘musical chairs.’)

on what she want to be when she grows up “I want to be a doctor when I grow up because I want to help people and save many lives.  Cambodia needs more doctors because they need to save people from malaria, fever, and wounds. Malaria kills people. People have wounds from wars and guns.”(Cambodia suffered through nearly thirty years of violent war, ending recently in the late 1990’s. The physical toll was immense on the population which is still struggling to recover. Today, many Cambodian people are severely disabled from the war. See Chaun Soph On, director of the Kazuko Nishie School)

on the new school building “I am happy for the new school because I will have classes in the beautiful new building.”

message to Kazuko Nishie “Thank you for everything!”
