Bun Dany, a 14-year old 5th grade student at the Sayura Watanabe School.

Bun Dany is a 14-year old 5th grade student at the new school. She is currently ranked number 3 among her 20 classmates first semester of this year. She has two brothers. She is the only child in the family attending the new school. Her mother is a farmer in the village and her father passed away when she was 3 years old. Her home is nearby. She walks 5 minutes to school everyday.

“At school, I like to study Khmer literature and applied science because these two subjects are easiest to learn. Math is difficult for me because I weak in measurements and arithmetic.”

“At home, I have to take care of my grandmother who is old and blind so sometimes it’s hard to try to get time to study by myself.”

“I want to continue my study until the high school level, but my mother said that the road to the high school from my village is busy and long. It is hard for a girl to go that school, she said. She wants me to leave school next year after I finish the 6th grade.”

“When I grow up, I want to work at a garment factory and earn money to subsidize expenses for my family. In the next few years, my mother will be old and I will have to be the breadwinner for the family in place of my mother.”
