The Cambodia Rural School Project

The Sharing Foundation School

Mon Seam is a third grade student at the Sharing Foundation School. Out of the
fifty-nine students in his class, he was ranked third.

On himself:

I am sixteen years old. I have seven siblings; two of them are studying at this school. My parents are rice farmers. Our house is a five-minute walk from here.

On the new building: I am very happy with the new school. I can learn here. At the old school, I only studied for half a month. After that, I studied at the deputy director’s house with twenty of my friends. The villagers tore down the old school because a new one was being built.

Favorite subject: Khmer is my favorite subject. I like it because it is easy to read. (I like to read) My favorite story is about an old woman who sells bananas. One day, the old woman was carrying some bananas to sell at the market. She walked, carrying the bananas on her head, and saw a rabbit lying on the road. She thought it was dead. So she picked up the rabbit and put it on top of the bananas. Once on top of the basket, the rabbit ate all the bananas, and ran away. The rabbit had tricked the old woman.

On his spare time: I go to the fields to take care of the cows. I also help my parents take care of the rice paddies. Sometimes, I help my parents at home. I’ll boil the rice and sweep the house. I also study.

In the future: When I am older, I want to be a steel-smith, because I want to make knives and axes.

If he could do anything: Teacher.
