The Violet Atkinson School

(October, 2001)

Khom Lay Horng is a 13-year-old fourth grade student at the Violet Atkinson School.  She was ranked second among her 35 classmates at the end of last year.  Her father is the village chief and her mother is a farmer.  She has five siblings.  Her younger brother is in first grade at the school.

In Their Own Words. . .

On school subjects: “My favorite subject is Khmer because it is easy to read.  My second favorite is mathematics because calculating is easy.”

On her hobbies: “I like swimming and reading stories and newspapers.”

On her future: “My father wants me to be a teacher when I grow up and I think that I will follow his wish.  When I finish elementary school, I plan to continue to middle and high school and then apply for a job as a professional teacher.  As a teacher, I will teach my students mathematics and literature as much as possible, so that they will be strong students.”

On leaving her village: “I have never left this village since I was born.  But I saw Phnom Penh on TV and I hope that I can visit it sometime in the future.”
