The Violet Atkinson School

(October, 2001)

Sen Chan Tha is an 11-year-old fourth grade student at the Violet Atkinson School.  He was ranked third among his 45 classmates at the end of last year.  His parents are farmers in Pream Lovear village, about 2 km away from the school.  He rides a bicycle to school every day.

In Their Own Words. . .

On the new building:  “I am very glad to have a new school building.  In the old building, during the dry season it was hot and not easy to study under the trees.”

On school subjects:   “I am best in Khmer class.  In my free time, I study my spelling and read.  I am bad at mathematics.  My teacher tries to teach me, but my memory is still bad at calculating .”

On his future:   “I want to go to university.  I hope that my parents can support me that far.  When I grow up, I want to be a nurse or doctor.  As a doctor, I can earn more money than other jobs and also help poor people who are ill.”

If I could go anywhere…  “If I had enough money, I would go to visit the United States.  I have seen the beautiful skyscrapers through the television.”
