The World Mate School Number Seven

(November, 2000)

Sang Phieng is a 12-year-old first grade student at the World Mate School Number Seven.

In Their Own Words. . .

On going to school: “I just started going to school a month ago.  I can understand Khmer when people use it, but I cannot speak it.  I use Tompuon every day.  My parents gave me a notebook and pencil to use at school.  Since then I have used four pages of the book.  I prefer this school building to the old one because it has tables and there is much light.”  [Ratanakkiri is home to many of Cambodia’s ethnic minorities.  One of the problems with schooling there is finding qualified teachers who speak the local languages.  It is also one of the poorest areas in Cambodia.]

On her future: “When I grow up I want to be a nurse or doctor.  As a doctor I can help people, and I will work in an office, not in the fields.”

Message for Toshu Fukami:  “I would like to thank Toshu Fukami for building a new concrete building for me to study in.”
