Girls Be Ambitious

A program that enables girls who are unable to go to school due conditions of poverty to attend one of our rural schools and receive an education instead of having to work in the fields, do chores at home or take care of siblings.

Heng Thav

Heng Thav is 13 years old, and is in grade 5 at The Janie’s School #524 in Snam Preah Village, Snam Preah Commune, Bakan District, Pursat Province.

Heng Thav has one little sister, she is the oldest sister in the family. Her father’s name is Van Chantha and she is 45 years old. He is a service worker at the construction sites and sometime he works as a whole day as a truck assistant when in need. Her mother’s name is Heurn Tim and she is 46 years old. She is a garment factory worker. Her family doesn’t have any farmland for growing rice in rainy season like other villagers, so both of them can get income depended on the job they do per day. Her father doesn’t have a permanent job, he is look like a service worker when in need, he can earn about 20000 riels to 30000 riels for the whole day and her mother gets 60,0000 riels ($150) per month from her work. Even they get the income from their salary but it still not enough to support for her whole family.

Thav usually spend all her free time from studying to look for fishes, shells, craps and frogs with her father around the village for their daily food. They are also growing some vegetables around their house.

At school, she isn’t an outstanding student. She gets fairly score in the monthly testing. She is really a quiet and gentle girl in the classroom. She comes to study English, Khmer and computer classes regularly. Her favorite subjects are Math and English because she thinks English is an international language and it is easy for her to find a good job.

In the future, she wants to be a doctor and work in the hospital at her village and her mother also wants her to study medical subject, both of them expected that, it would give them a good income to change their living and raise them from property.
