The Kan Tourth Nippon

Foundation School

Mrs.Som Sitha is a teacher at the Kan Tourt Nippon Foundation School.
She has been a teacher for two years.

On herself: “I am married and have two sons and three daughters. My eldest has stopped studying, and three others are staying with their grandfather. They study at the Ra School. The youngest is a first grader at the Kan Tourth Nippon Foundation School. My husband is a farmer. Our house is about 200 meters away from the school and I come here on foot. Besides teaching I farm as well.”

On the new building: “I am very happy with the new building because it is safe for our children to study in. It is very different to the old one. We no longer need to be afraid that the rain will disturb classes. I especially like that we have a computer in this school, and a teacher showing us how to use it. I think that in the future our children will be brighter thanks to the good education. This will make it easier for them to find a good job one day.”

On teaching: “There are many people in this village who are illiterate. I decided to become a teacher in order to help them rid themselves of illiteracy.”

On school subjects: “At present, four subjects are being taught in primary school. I think that most of the students like to study Khmer and social studies. Studying Khmer helps them to communicate easier with their families and other people. The subject of social studies is important for educating children to be responsible citizens.”

On keeping the students interested in school:

“I give out congratulation letters to the top five students of each class at the end of each semester. Sometimes they even receive a notebook or a pen each.”
