On himself

I am fifty-one years old and have eight children. Two of my grandchildren visit this school. My wife, she’s a farmer. I have been a teacher since 1982. I got the position of as a director in 1994. Actually, I was an acting director since 1982, but at that time the ministry of education was poorly organized, and my position had not been made official until 1994.

On the new building:

I am very happy with the new school because it has more rooms than the previous one. In the old school, there were only three rooms and it was not enough for all the students to study properly. Villagers are very glad to have the new school as well, and provided the material to fence the school. This village itself has a long history, but it has never had a school like this. As I mentioned earlier, there wasn’t enough rooms for all the students in the old school, so the students wishing to study sometimes had to go to a school 4.5 kilometers away. To build the old school, we used the material from the former Khmer Rouge communal kitchen. It had no walls, and the tiles were old. When the wind blew, we had to move the students out, because the building would sway. I didn’t enjoy teaching at the old building, but there were no other alternatives.
