The Cambodia Rural School Project

The Nicholas and Zachary

Poor School

Chan Tunh is second grade student at the Nicholas and Zachary Poor School. She is 10 years old and has three brothers and two sisters. She is the youngest child in her family. Her mother is a widow. Her family came to the village 10 years ago. Her house is a five-minute walk from the school

On her studies:

“I attend my classes everyday. I have never been absent from class because if I am absent, I cannot catch up with the lesson I missed. I think that knowledge is our most precious property.”

On the new building:

“Last year, I studied in the old, wooden building. Now, my teacher allows me to study in the new building. I am happy to be learning in the new building because it has many windows and it is bright.”

On her future:

“When I grow up, I want to be a doctor because it is easier to earn money that way than through any other job. I have noted that when someone is sick, she or he goes to see the doctor; therefore the doctor is an important person.”
