Khom Sok Chan, a 13-year old 5th grade student at the Sayura Watanabe School.

Khom Sok Chan is a 13-year old 5th grade student at the new school. He is ranked number 1 among his 20 classmates the first semester of this year. He is the 4th child in a family of three sons and two daughters. His parents are farmers in the village and he walks 10 minutes to get to the school every day.

“At school, I like studying math and Khmer literature. They are easier subjects for me to study and I also think that they are more important than any other subjects. For example, math is necessary for every day business while Khmer literature is mostly needed for communication. I used to send letters in Khmer to my brother, who is actually now working in Thailand.”

“I want to continue my studies unto the university level, but I am scared of transportation accidents because my sister got into one last year when she rode her bike to school. She became disabled because of the accident and now stays at home. On the other hand, my family is also poor and they cannot support my studies.”
