The Stefan Ellis School

(August, 2001)

San Sak is a 15-year-old third grade student at the Stefan Ellis School.  He is the oldest of seven children, all of whom are at the school with him.  His father is a farmer and his mother sells souvenirs in Siem Reap town.

In Their Own Words. . .

On having his siblings in school with him: “I like being in the same school as my brothers and sisters because we used to go to different schools, because no school nearby had all of the primary school grades.  This school is also much closer to our home than our old schools.”

On school subjects: “I like Khmer because it is the easiest subject.  I don’t like mathematics because it is the most difficult for me.”

On his free time: “I sell souvenirs with my mother.  I can earn 3000 riel a day in profit.  Otherwise, I play hide-and-seek and other games with my friends.”  [3000 riel is roughly US$0.75.]
