The Cambodia Rural School Project

The Ta Sanh Nippon

Foundation School

Soun Thida is a 13-year-old, fourth grade student at the Ta Sanh Nippon Foundation School.
She was ranked first in her class of 23 students.

On herself:

I have five siblings. Two of them are studying at school with me. Our parents are both farmers. I walk to school every day. It takes only two or three minutes to get to the school.

On the new building:

It’s very comfortable to study here, because the teachers take care of the students well. At the old school, students wouldn’t always come to school, because whenever it rained the rain would splash into the classroom and make everybody wet. So the teachers would cancel classes. Some students didn’t like studying there at all, because the school was so old. It didn’t have enough desks, and the blackboard was broken. What I like the most about the new school is that I’m no longer bothered by the rain. So everybody can study without having to worry about getting wet. Now I come to school every day. Everybody comes to school every day.

Favorite subject:

I like Khmer the most, because as Khmer children we need to know or understand our own language.

On her spare time:

I help my parents at our house after school. Sometimes I also go to the field and help plant vegetables.

In the future:

I want to be a teacher. I want to help develop this country and help the next generation.

If she could do anything:

I want to be a teacher.

If she could travel anywhere

If I could go anywhere, I would go to my homeland in Battambang town. We moved here last year because the life in Battambang was very difficult. Life here is better, but I still miss Battambang sometimes.
